Background of the Study
Code‑switching, the practice of alternating between languages in communication, is a prominent feature of Nigerian digital discourse. This study evaluates code‑switching practices by comparing language use on WhatsApp and Facebook. In Nigeria, where multilingualism is the norm, digital platforms serve as vibrant spaces for linguistic experimentation. WhatsApp, with its informal and immediate communication style, often encourages spontaneous language alternation, reflecting everyday conversational patterns. In contrast, Facebook’s public and diverse audience fosters more deliberate and structured code‑switching, where users balance cultural identity with formal language norms (Adetayo, 2023). These differences highlight how digital context and audience influence language behavior, resulting in varied code‑switching strategies that impact message clarity and social identity. The study aims to systematically analyze these practices, exploring the sociocultural and technological factors that drive code‑switching, and to compare the extent and function of language alternation across these two widely used platforms (Oluwaseun, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the prevalence of code‑switching in Nigerian online communication, comparative research examining its practice on WhatsApp versus Facebook is scarce. The distinct communication contexts—private versus public—suggest that code‑switching may serve different functions on each platform, yet current studies do not provide a detailed account of these differences. This lack of focused analysis limits our understanding of how digital contexts shape bilingual practices and the subsequent impact on identity construction and message delivery. This study addresses the need for a comprehensive comparison of code‑switching practices to bridge the existing research gap (Ibrahim, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  • To compare code‑switching frequency and patterns on WhatsApp and Facebook.

  • To identify the functions of code‑switching in different digital contexts.

  • To evaluate the impact on identity and communication effectiveness.

Research Questions

  • What are the differences in code‑switching practices on WhatsApp and Facebook?

  • How do contextual factors influence these practices?

  • What role does code‑switching play in shaping digital identity?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative evaluation of code‑switching in Nigerian digital discourse, offering insights into the influence of platform context on bilingual communication. The findings will contribute to sociolinguistic theory and inform communication strategies in multilingual environments. This research is particularly valuable for educators, media practitioners, and policymakers seeking to understand and harness digital language practices (Chukwu, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms
